Types of Higher Education Institutes

Private Colleges and Universities

These institutions and colleges are privately run. The tuition fee charged by them is usually higher than that charged by state-run universities. Often, private universities and colleges do not have as big a campus or as many facilities when compared with the state-run ones.

Community Colleges

Community colleges are two-year colleges that award an associate’s degree as well as diploma courses. The credits earned by the graduates of community colleges can be utilized by them when they pursue four-year degree programs from institutions or universities to get exemptions.

Institutes of Technology

An institute of technology is a college that provides at least four years of study in science and technology. Some have graduate programs, while others offer short-term courses in engineering and science.

Liberal Arts Colleges

Liberal arts degrees are most commonly offered in the US. There are hundreds of dedicated liberal arts colleges and universities in the US, with many offering a liberal arts program alongside other options.

There are now many programs that fall within the broad range of the category. A typical liberal arts degree program is interdisciplinary, covering topics from humanities, social, natural and formal sciences. Although the topics covered in liberal arts degree programs vary from institution to institution, they are generally accepted as covering the following fields:

  • Humanities: art, literature, linguistics, philosophy, religion, ethics, modern foreign languages, music, theater, speech, classical languages/linguistic programs (comparative English/Latin/Greek), etc.

The Ivy League colleges

The Ivy League is a collegiate athletic conference comprising sports teams from eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States.
